Hey kids! Let's talk! Thank you for listening to the Parkway Kids Podcast. Today we're talking about something very important. And here's your host, Pastor Jim.
SPEAKER_07Well, hello everybody! This is Pastor Jim, and thanks for listening to our podcast with today. I have some bigger kids in here in the studio in my office. And uh we have a parent over here on the side, and Miss Kim, my wife, is over here. And uh so I'm gonna have them introduce I'm I'm the children's pastor at Parkway Fellowship in Richmond, Texas. And uh today we're gonna talk about something that uh all of us have experienced. It's called being around a hypocrite. And I got a sound effect. It's drama time. So um I'm gonna start over here and ask your name and what grade you're in, and your favorite food and where you get it. Okay, so go.
SPEAKER_04My name is Bella Gurley. My grade, I'm in ninth grade.
SPEAKER_07Ninth.
SPEAKER_04And my favorite food is I don't know, I don't really have a favorite food. I like e I I guess E-Star. Me and my mom went there last night. It's Vietnamese.
SPEAKER_07E-Star?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's like a buffet. It's really good.
SPEAKER_07That sounds yummy. So what kind of food was it?
SPEAKER_04It's Vietnamese food.
SPEAKER_07Oh, Vietnamese food.
SPEAKER_04But like their sausage there is so good.
SPEAKER_07That's okay, you're allowed to say it. It's your favorite food, not mine. Not Miss Kim and I had pizza last night, and I we love pizza. But um, so yeah, it's uh it's good stuff. Good stuff. Well, nice to have you, Bella. Who's next over here straight across?
SPEAKER_03Uh my name is Gabby Davis. Um, I go, um, I'm in seventh grade. Uh my favorite food is probably spaghetti, and my grandma makes it. Oh so shout out to Nani. There we go.
SPEAKER_07Shout out to Nani.
SPEAKER_03She makes the best.
SPEAKER_07She makes the best spaghetti.
SPEAKER_03She has like a secret ingredient.
SPEAKER_07Ooh.
SPEAKER_03It's called Love.
SPEAKER_07So nice. I love spaghetti too. Um that's good. Did she put meatballs in it or just sauce?
SPEAKER_03It's just it's like meat sauce.
SPEAKER_07Nice. I like the Italian sausage. In fact, when when Kim and I were in California, we went to this what was it called? Spaghetti factory. And uh they had this thing, this dish called browned butter uh spaghetti. And so they would put butter in a pan and brown it, and then they would cook um so they would do that, and then they would put this masithra cheese over it. Oh my mouth is like walking. I'm getting hungry. A side of uh a side of Italian sausage. So good. Every time I went, I was like, oh my gosh. I know exactly what I'm getting because it's so good. Okay, thanks. Nice to have you, Gabby. And last but not least, the young man here.
SPEAKER_02Um, yeah, my name is Lane Dixon. I'm in sixth grade, and my favorite food is probably enchiladas from Larry's Mexican restaurant. Larry's?
SPEAKER_07I'd never heard of that one. Oh Larry's re Larry's Mexican restaurant. Is it uh a restaurant where you can go in and pick up food or is it a because sometimes people go to these food trucks.
SPEAKER_02No, it's like an actual restaurant where you can like sit down inside and eat. Nice. And they also at the cash register um where they like keep the money you pay them, they have this kind of like mini convenience shop where there's like different types of candy and mints and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_07Awesome. Larry's Mexican food.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I need to write that down.
SPEAKER_07You do. I was just well, you just listen to the podcast and say, okay, I remember Larry's. Well, it's nice to have everybody here. Thanks for being here. And um we're just gonna get started. So I have a little intro song to do give us before we do the scripture. Here's the intro song. Oh yeah. Mmm, nice. So everybody say James! James! That's my name. I thought I was in trouble. Everybody say one!
SPEAKER_03One twenty-six.
SPEAKER_07Oh, that was good. That was good. James 126 is an awesome scripture. The whole book of James is awesome. Uh did you know that who do you do? Anybody know who wrote the book of James?
SPEAKER_04My guess would be James.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, James was the brother of Jesus, and he wrote the book of James.
SPEAKER_02Jesus had a brother, Jesus. Jesus had siblings? Yes, but I'm saying Jesus had a brother. I thought Jesus' only family was his parents.
SPEAKER_07No, he had brothers and sisters.
SPEAKER_02So Mary had a kids.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. That's crazy. With with Joseph.
SPEAKER_02Wait, imagine being like actually actually directly related to him.
SPEAKER_07I know, right? That would be a hard reputation to live up to. So you're not you're not Jesus.
SPEAKER_00You're just related. You're just James.
SPEAKER_07You're just James. So James 126 says, This person's religion is worthless. So, oh, I don't want my religion to be worthless. I want it to mean something. So, we're gonna give you some motions to do uh for James 126. The first word is this. So get your pointer finger out and point at something straight down in front of you and say, This.
SPEAKER_01This.
SPEAKER_07Oh, that was so good. James 126 from the beginning says, This. This. Okay. Next next sign is you took your hands and you put your fingers out and your palms are facing each other, and then go down a little bit. And that's sign language for person. But we're gonna add a apostrophe S at the end of this. So persons. So what was James 26 from the beginning? Says Jesus.
SPEAKER_04Oh, this.
SPEAKER_07Start again. From the beginning says, this persons. Now, religion, you put your point of finger and your middle finger on your left shoulder, and then you're gonna twist it and go and go out just a little bit. And when you do that, you're gonna say religion.
SPEAKER_06Religion.
SPEAKER_07Okay, so what does what's what word do we say when we do this? Religion. Nice! Okay, James 1.26 from the beginning says this person's religion. Now put your fing hands together, and then we're gonna say is worthless. It's worthless. So we put our hands together, hands together, and then we come and separate them and bring them, and so our homes are still facing each other, but we just go down and out a little bit. So that is is worthless. Worthless. Nice.
SPEAKER_01So James 1 26 from the beginning says this person's religion is worthless.
SPEAKER_07Whoa! Is worthless. And so the the whole scripture uh from James 1 says, if anyone thinks himself to be religious, scrupulously observant of the rituals of his faith, and does not control his tongue, but deludes his own heart, this person's religion is worthless, meaning futile or barren. Pure and unblemished religion, as it expressed in outward acts in the sight of our God and Father, is this to visit and look after the fatherless and the widows in their distress, and to keep oneself uncontaminated by the secular world. In other words, your your religion is worthless if you say one do this, if you say something, but then you do something completely opposite, and if you don't care for the people that are hurting. So, one more time, James 126 from the beginning says This person's religion is worthless. Oh, so good. We gotta end it with a Okay, it's time for that thing we like to call rock and roll story. Here's the theme. It's rock and rolls. Ooh, that's high. I didn't hear anybody singing. I was doing a sound.
SPEAKER_04Well, because like I don't I don't know. I don't even know the lyrics.
SPEAKER_07They're written right there. Anyway, uh this this rock and roll story is called Don't Be a Hypocrite, and it's from Matthew 15, 1 through 20. Now, when I say Pharisees or Rules, we're gonna do this.
SPEAKER_05Danger.
SPEAKER_07Danger. Okay, so I heard you that time. Nice. I love it. So Pharisees or Rules.
SPEAKER_05Danger! Danger.
SPEAKER_07When I say Jesus or God, we're gonna sing this song.
SPEAKER_05You love you, make me woman or shout! Jesus or God. You live me woman a shout!
SPEAKER_07And finally, when I say the words pure heart, we are gonna sing this. You guys are some good singers.
SPEAKER_04Well, I can't hear myself me.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I can't hear myself either, so I don't know if I'm doing good or not.
SPEAKER_07You're doing good. You're doing good. In the book of Matthew, everybody say Matthew!
SPEAKER_02Matthew!
SPEAKER_07Chapter 15, we read a true story about Jesus.
SPEAKER_05You know, you make me want to shop some Pharisees.
SPEAKER_07Danger! Danger! And we're no, no, only one time.
unknownThat wasn't me.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that was me. I screwed up.
SPEAKER_07That's okay, you're good. And religious people came to him one day and asked, why do your disciples play fast and loose with the rules?
SPEAKER_05Danger! Danger! Oh, you did it!
SPEAKER_07I gave him the signal. Stop. Okay.
SPEAKER_05But Jesus! Take my heels up and shout!
SPEAKER_07Put it right back on them. Why do you use your rules? To play fast and loose with gods. You know you make me run a shot!
SPEAKER_05Take my heels up the shop!
SPEAKER_07Commands, you cancel gods!
SPEAKER_05You know you make me run a shot! Take my heels up the shop!
SPEAKER_07Commands with your man-made rules.
SPEAKER_05Danger! Uh-huh. Danger!
SPEAKER_07Isaiah had a prophecy. I think I'm getting the hang of it. Isaiah, everybody say Isaiah. Isaiah had a prophecy about you, Pharisees.
SPEAKER_05Danger! Danger! And then uh uh. Uh-uh.
SPEAKER_07No, no. These people. These, and this is uh this is Isaiah's prophecy. These people make a big show of saying the right thing, but their heart isn't in it. They act like they're worshiping me, but they're they don't mean it. They just use me as a cover for teaching whatever suits their fancy. We have a word for people like that. They are hypocrites. I got a sound effect. Oh no, no. They're hypocrites saying one thing but doing another. Jesus!
SPEAKER_05You night mean a shout! Getting my hands up and shout!
SPEAKER_07wants us to have a pure heart. Well, how do we do that? We ask him for a new heart, ask him to come into our lives and guard our hearts and not saying one thing and doing another.
SPEAKER_05God will give us a pure heart.
SPEAKER_07And like our scripture said in James 126, what did it say?
SPEAKER_01This person's religion is worthless.
SPEAKER_07Oh, don't be that guy.
SPEAKER_05Peter heart.
SPEAKER_07The N player guitars. That sounded so weird. I can make it high. I like it. It's just it's all good.
SPEAKER_02I'm terrible at that. It's wrong now.
SPEAKER_07Nice. So I have some questions for you guys.
SPEAKER_02Uh-oh.
SPEAKER_07So, how do we know what God's commands are? Who wants to ask answer that question?
SPEAKER_02The Bi uh The Bible tells us what His commands are and we have to follow the Bible.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. So what other what other ways can we know what God's rules are?
SPEAKER_04Like He can also speak to us.
SPEAKER_07He can speak to us. Yeah, how can He speak to us though? Like maybe think about tomorrow. What are we gonna do tomorrow? This thing called Sunday that we do. Church. That's crazy. Sometimes we can learn God's commands by coming to church. Tomorrow, the big people are gonna hear the same story and they're but they're gonna talk about it in an adult way. Today we just kind of did it with like how how I would do this this message with kids, with your guys' age people. And uh so yes, but sometimes we can learn God's commands in different ways. Um can you think of any man-made rules that aren't God's commands? So, what in this story uh I didn't I didn't tell you this part, but uh the the the people, the Pharisees DANGER! DANGER Jesus' disciples, we're mad at Jesus' disciples because they were like, they don't wash their hands before they eat. Was that a God rule or was that a man rule?
SPEAKER_02A man-made rule.
SPEAKER_07That's a man-made rule. And Jesus was like, you guys are so far away from what God really wanted. Uh it doesn't matter if you wash your hands. I mean, it was it's good if you wash your hands before you eat, but it's not one of God, God bless you. It's it's not one of God's rules. God's rules are are meant to be kept. So, do you guys can you think of anything else? Or that that that's probably fine. How can you get a pure heart? How can we get a pure heart?
SPEAKER_03That's really hard. Like connecting with God.
SPEAKER_07But I feel like say the one Gabby, say it again.
SPEAKER_03Like connecting with God. We didn't sing the song for pure heart.
SPEAKER_07Pure heart?
unknownI like it wrong.
SPEAKER_07Nice reminder.
SPEAKER_04What I feel like is like when it comes to pure heart, not like every heart is gonna be pure or like is pure because we everybody has like a little like sin or like danger in them. So I feel like it's really hard to have a full heart, like pure heart.
SPEAKER_07Here's the thing you gotta do. What's the first thing you gotta do to pursue a relationship with God?
SPEAKER_04Uh Bible pray. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07You pray and ask him to forgive you of your sins, and that starts a process. It's called everybody say process. Process. Coming to know God and having a pure heart is a process because we are s we are human and we so we make b human mistakes, and sometimes those hurt God's heart because they're against his commands. And so but it's a process. So as we get closer to God, do we stop doing those things more?
SPEAKER_04I feel like you do them like more often.
SPEAKER_07Or like maybe like you don't do them as often. Really? Yeah, you you as you get closer to God, uh, those things start to like mean something to you. I'll give you an example. So for many, many years, I knew what God's command was in order to like give uh him a tenth of what we earn. And it was really hard for me to understand that. So I didn't quite follow that the way I should have. And that that's like one of these.
unknownOh no.
SPEAKER_07So but then I started to realize, oh no, I the more the more I give to God. So we started giving 10% and sometimes even more. And so when we started giving, things didn't break. Like I didn't have expenses on my car. Like I like the the stuff that like at home and the recording equipment that I have right here in this studio, th things like that I was able to buy when I was like, wait, I'm giving God like a lot of money, but I still I have more money. It's weird. But what's that called? It's called getting more and closer to God and getting it for your heart. So there's gonna be things of that like that in your life that you as you follow God closer and as you get closer to Him, you don't follow the man rule. Yeah, you follow the man rules. Don't don't speed on the freeway because you're gonna get a ticket. But that's not a God command. God doesn't say thou shalt not speed, you know, but it's a good thing to follow because you're you're you it's safe, or you could like crash into the phone because you're speeding. Yeah, so some of those rules are meant to be kept, and that's fine. Uh, but that's not a god command. So what is in your in your opinion, what is a hypocrite? Some Bella.
SPEAKER_04My bad, I'm sorry. Do you want to go first? No, you couldn't. Um, I feel like hypocrites are someone that like tells you that, like, like for example, in teenage slang, something that gives you the ick. So like a person Oh the ick.
SPEAKER_06No, I liked it.
SPEAKER_04Like a that's what I say, that's what I'm making my mom say. Yeah. So like a person could be like talking about like somebody else. Yeah. That's like an ick. And then they're and then like the person that's a hypocrite would say, Oh, I don't like it when you talk about people, but then that person goes behind your back.
SPEAKER_07Uh oh. That sounds like Yes, that's a perfect example of it. Yeah. So anybody else can't.
SPEAKER_04I think it's so real.
SPEAKER_07Mean slay.
SPEAKER_02No, it is not slay.
SPEAKER_07It is so not slay. So anybody else anybody else got any ideas about being a hypocrite? Lane, you had something.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. A person who like says something and then does the does the exact opposite.
SPEAKER_07Yes.
SPEAKER_02Like, sometimes I can feel feel like parents sometimes maybe do stuff like that. Like they'll say, like, yeah, later we'll go out and buy ice cream, and then you don't. Oh.
SPEAKER_04Well, like, or like I feel like like when they say, like, don't say cuss words, and then they turn around and say cuss words.
SPEAKER_06Then they get mad.
SPEAKER_02Like, if you accidentally break a glass, then they'll start saying cuss words. Yeah, I know, right?
SPEAKER_07Yes, I I see that. So I had when I was growing up, I had a friend, and I won't say his name because I don't want his his uh white the person, no, his his dad. Because I was like, Your dad, you're done.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_07My bad. Can you blurt it out? It's okay, it's okay. Um, so I s I said, hey, your dad is so nice, and he's like, oh he's he says he's he follows Jesus, but then after he goes to church, and he's good on Sunday, but then Monday through Saturday, he doesn't he doesn't follow Jesus like he should. And I was like, What? He seems so nice, and he's like, Yeah, he's a hypocrite. And I was like, What's that word? And he's like, Oh, it means you you kind of say one thing and then do another, and and I was like, Oh. And so I was like, oh that that made an impression on me because I still remember that to this day. That was a like a long time.
SPEAKER_04I feel like it's huge when like a kid calls out their parents because like you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, yeah, no, is an awesome guy. Uh I still I'm still friends with him. And I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Sorry for saying your name.
SPEAKER_07So uh maybe we can blur it out. We're gonna do your Bible.
SPEAKER_04Blur out all the seven times we've said it every time. Make that eight.
SPEAKER_07But it's it's uh so why does that hurt Christianity? Why do you think hypocrites? Yeah, like why would that hurt Christianity? I feel like I oh Oh, Bella, you're getting pointed at by Miss Kim.
SPEAKER_04That's Gabby.
SPEAKER_02Gabby, I mean Gabby, Gabby, Gabby.
SPEAKER_07Gabby, you're getting pointed at. What do you think? Do you have something? Um why does it hurt Christians?
SPEAKER_03Like, like, if you say like um you shouldn't do this because you're not following uh Christ, and then you turn around and just like be uh cold hearted and not you don't have a pure heart about uh Christianity. And um like it just affects your relationship with God because he's trying to help you not like he's trying to help you um not be hypocritical and stuff, and you're just like telling people stuff that you shouldn't be doing, but you're doing it when you're telling it. She said it perfectly.
SPEAKER_07Perfectly, perfectly is correct.
SPEAKER_04Like like we were me and my dad were going to H E V and I was explaining something that happened at school, and I kept saying like and he's like, Can you stop that?
SPEAKER_07I'm like, No, I can't It's okay.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so it's so hard to explain stuff without saying like it is.
SPEAKER_07It it's it's hard and not say like and uh so Yeah, like Yeah, but uh it it hurts it hurts the Christian an Christianity because then it allows people that don't follow Jesus say, Well you guys are just a bunch of hypocrites. You say one thing and do another. So it gives them an excuse not to follow Christ because they're just like, you guys don't really follow Christ. And it's like, oh yeah, that's true. So you have to say you have to say and do the same thing. You can't you can't say one thing and then do another because it hurts the cause. It hurts the cause of Christ. And we've but we've all known people and we all have to say, you know, you can't control what other people do. My dad was like, I one time I was talking to my dad, and I was like, Dad, why do these people keep doing bad stuff? And he's like, you know what? They know what to do, they know the right thing to do, but you can't control them, you can't like manipulate them into doing something that they really don't want to do. And I was like, Oh, yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_03So like forcing people, yeah.
SPEAKER_07You can't force people to do the right stuff. You just gotta, you know, you can control who.
SPEAKER_03You gotta you gotta show them to you, you you can only control yourself and you have to show them to God, Torah. Because God can God is the only one that can help them. You're only responsible for you.
SPEAKER_07That's right. You're only responsible for you. So, um good thoughts, people. That was so good. Good thoughts. So, uh, anybody wanna give a shout out to anybody? Ooh. Ooh, shout-outs. Let's go.
SPEAKER_02Shout out, shout out, shout out to my dad for bringing me here in the call. Shout out to my mom for missing her meeting to bring me here.
SPEAKER_07Bella, thanks for having me. Lane was uh his dad and his uh two his brother and sister that came in. Your sister and brother are so cute.
SPEAKER_01They are? Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_07I mean, you don't see it. You don't see it, but you don't see it at home. Um they hypocrites. Wait, I gotta sound like that.
SPEAKER_01Yes, they are. Oh no. Did I say that right?
SPEAKER_07If I go either.
SPEAKER_02If I go into one of their rooms.
SPEAKER_07Oh, don't ouch them on here.
SPEAKER_02Okay, okay.
SPEAKER_07Going around the world. Come on. Um Gabby, do you have somebody to give a shout-out to?
SPEAKER_03I don't to Nani for the best spaghetti ever. I was just gonna say, don't show my dad this. You're gonna have to get offended. He'll be like, he'll be like, wow.
SPEAKER_07You're gonna have to invite us over when Nani makes their spaghetti.
SPEAKER_04I have another shout-out.
SPEAKER_07Go ahead, Bella.
SPEAKER_02Shout out for Jesus and my friends. Yes. Yes, yeah. I'll just say I still have a bite mark from going to my sister's room.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you're still on that?
SPEAKER_07So I just wanted to tell I wanted to tell the podcast people that Bella and Gabby are helping us in the LGI. It's a it's called a large it's a large group room where we do preschool and two-year-old chapel time. And tomorrow, Bella, is your first day to be up in front with the kids. It's gonna be awesome. And Gabby helps backstage. And Lane, I found out today, he helps on cameras in big church. You do? That is awesome. So that is that is amazing.
SPEAKER_02I'm doing all the Easter services, every single one of them.
SPEAKER_07Wow.
SPEAKER_04See, I used to serve every service, but then I got so tired and I would be so cranky during the day. I was I was like, okay, maybe I should just go to service second and then serve third.
SPEAKER_07There you go. That sounds like a great idea. So, any other final thoughts? Anyone want to uh close us out in prayer?
SPEAKER_04I'll do it.
SPEAKER_07Oh, let's go.
SPEAKER_04I'll take one for the team.
SPEAKER_07I maybe take one for the team. Hit it.
SPEAKER_04Wait, how do you start it? Like Dear God? Yeah, dear God. Yeah.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_04Dear God, I want to thank uh you for all the opportunities that you brought us and for letting us be on this podcast to share our stories and to share our side of what a hypocrite is like because I know we don't like them. And I want to thank you for having um for giving us spring breaks so we could all have a break from school. And um Amen. Amen. I'm so proud of myself I didn't say Mike at all.
SPEAKER_07That's awesome. Hey, hey guys, thanks so much for being here today. Thank you. And uh and and don't let this be in your life. Don't be a hypocrite. Have a pure heart.
SPEAKER_05That's the way okay, everybody say bye to the podcast people.
SPEAKER_02Bye to the podcast people. Bye. Bye.
SPEAKER_04Goodbye. Goodbye. We're still teenagers, okay, guys?
SPEAKER_02Wait. There we go.
SPEAKER_06There you go.
SPEAKER_02You're about to you need a better one. Does that mean we have to play the one? Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_04I like it.
SPEAKER_06One more time.
SPEAKER_02No, not that one.
SPEAKER_04I like it. The shout one that I can make my hands on a shout.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that when you say it.
SPEAKER_07Alright.
SPEAKER_03Love you, Pie. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Three, two. Goodbye.
SPEAKER_02Oh no. Fair long. Wait, you call all of that?
SPEAKER_07Still going.
SPEAKER_02Oh, what? Wait, what are we calling it?
SPEAKER_07Oh no. Farewell.
SPEAKER_04I love you, Pookie. Bye bye.
SPEAKER_06Hey kids. Let's talk.
